What are SUPER FOODs?

Super foods are natural foods that are highly concentrated with a complex combination of fabulous, health giving nutrients. These nourishing powerhouses may contain vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, carotenoids, phytosterols, and other disease fighting, youth enhancing goodies.

Super foods, in essence are the foods potent enough to defend against ill health. They can lower cholesterol, fight cancer, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, boost the immune system, have a positive effect on our moods…and are the foods to eat if we want to stay young, healthy, and vibrant. There are no side effects apart from optimum health and wellbeing!

Sprinkle Super foods on your Food like Fairy DustI try to add as many super foods into my diet as possible. There are so many little ways to make a few tweaks and fit them into our daily life…and they bring so much extra flavor and goodness to our food.

While eating these foods in any way promotes good health, a lot of evidence shows that many of them are more potent when eaten raw. You may choose to go on a raw diet, but if you don’t (like me) you can still sprinkle your food with their magic.

For example, if you are eating yogurt or muesli for breakfast, you could incorporate berries, bee pollen, or Maca powder.

If you are having a rice dish, you could finely cut up broccoli, cabbage or health providing mushroom powder on the top.

Broccoli Alone WON’T Prevent CancerI recently read in the Guardian (a London newspaper) on June 11 that someone said “although so-called super foods, such as broccoli, contain a high level of anti-oxidants, thought to “mop up” toxins produced by cells, nutritionists still don’t know if that alone can help protect against cancer.

Also, our bodies only take as many vitamins as we need, so overdosing on blueberries just means that we will excrete the excess vitamin C. In some cases, an excess of vitamins can be harmful. Too much vitamin A is thought to cause birth defects. “There is no such thing as super foods,” says Denny, “only a super diet.”

I find his point interesting, but annoying at the same time. Of course if you never exercise, smoke all day, eat loads of food with chemicals and pesticides, hate your job and feel invariably stressed, a few heads of broccoli every night are not going to protect against cancer. Also, his latter point that our bodies only take in as many vitamins as they need is a perfect reason to eat super foods…because we can’t overdose!

I suppose this first point does need to be made. Indulging in a variety of the greatest nutrients that nature has provided us is the best way to take control of our health and feel empowered by what we eat. This of course is part of an overall lifestyle with exercise and stress combating techniques to fight off unwanted and ageing visitors.

    That is true. I totally agree that a wide variety of natural foods is the best way to keep healthy combined with a good exercise program. But not all of us have the time, or other reasons keep us from eating all the good nutrients we should be eating. Super foods can become sensible food in today’s world. However, we should always ask our doctor before taking any supplement. Overdosage of vitamins is harmful so it is good to let your doctor advise you on the correct dosage for you.     I often hear people claim lack of time and cost as reasons why they don’t eat healthy. What a bunch of hog wash. Raw fruits and vegetables are an easy addition to any meal, take hardly any time to prepare, and pans to clean up.

    and cost? on a recent trip to the store -
    broccoli - 56 cents, green leaf lettuce - 1.49, tomatoes - 92 cents, baby carrots - 99 cents, scallions - 50 cents, bananas - 76 cents.

    How much cheaper and easier can you get? Plus the money you’ll save on drugs ;-)
