Anti Ageing Super foods: Blueberries

Last summer I went to Finland with a group of friends. We stayed at my friend Malin’s family summerhouse, a log cabin in the forest by the sea. This place was filled with super foods for the soul…and there were wild blueberries bursting on each branch.

I went blueberry picking with a gusto that probably seemed a little mad to my fellow nature dwellers. I just couldn’t believe that was in a forest jammed packed with this health promoting super duper food. And hey, the amount of blueberries that I could gather in 5 minutes would be ridiculously expensive and half the quality back home. We had this special blueberry picking tool that meant you could get loads berries with one scoop.

It was jam and pie everyday. As the group health nut, I stubbornly refused to allow anyone to add sugar to or bake them since couldn’t stand the thought of them losing any of their power.

The Fruit of Youth

This beautiful fruit will turn back the clock like few others. They have one of the highest amounts of antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable, which protect and defend us against youth attacking criminals. Antioxidants are anti inflammatory, so they are one of the best anti aging skin care products and wrinkles are prevented.

The nickname Brain Berries have been given to our blue friends for their positive effect on the brain. Eating them is part of a healthy brain fitness program. Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties build a protective coat around the brain to fight aging and deterioration. There is also evidence that blueberries may help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.

Studies have shown that even a mouse can benefit from the anti ageing compounds in Blueberries. One study at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University showed that mice that were fed blueberries regularly performed better than the control group in motor behavioral learning and memory, and had better balance, coordination and speed. They were also more open to exploring and discovering their surroundings.

Here are some other blueberries health benefits you can enjoy with regular consumption:

· The anti inflammatory properties appear to prevent and relieve arthritic symptoms.

· The vibrant nutrients help to strengthen blood vessels, which can balance blood pressure levels and increase heart health.

· A study by Dr Agnes Rimando has shown that blueberries could provide a side effect free alternative to drugs for lowering cholesterol. .

· Blueberries are full of manganese, which supports strong bones.

· Packed with vitamin C, they are powerful immune system boosters.

· Studies that show blueberries, like cranberries, help maintain urinary tract health.

· These powerhouses have been shown to defend against cancer.

And don’t forget, eating blueberries is one of the most potent anti aging skin care foods, and can be added to your list of alkaline foods.

The best part about eating Blueberries is that they are so incredibly delicious. I can chow down a whole bowl full in minutes.

There is only one serious side effect. They can permanently stain your clothes so eat with caution.
