Some “Natural Organic” Products are not so Natural

Organic skin care products and cleaning products are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, sales of natural skin care increased more than almost any other type of product in the UK last year. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that some of these natural skin care brands cannot be trusted.

A study commissioned by the Organic Consumers Association analyzed many of the most popular “natural” and “organic” personal care products for the presence of a carcinogenic substance called contaminant 1,4-Dioxane. The research was conducted by a reputable third-party laboratory.

It was discovered that SOME natural skin care and organic skin care products contain this disease causing ingredient.

1,4-Dioxane is a by-product of cheap, short cut compounds, and is considered a chemical “known to the State of California to cause cancer.” It is also suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant, among others, according to the California EPA, and is a leading groundwater contaminant.

While previous studies have revealed the presence of 1,4-Dioxane in conventional personal care products, it is assumed that organic products do not contain these types of chemicals, and that some companies have most likely intentionally deceived their customers.

None of the brands that were found to contain this ingredient are certified under the USDA National Organic Program.

Some of the brands that have been found to contain this carcinogenic chemical include:
· Jason
· Kiss My Face
· Giovanni Organic Cosmetics
· Nature’s Gate Organics
· Nutri Biotic
· Ecover Washing Liquid
· Healthy Times Baby Herbal Garden
· Whole Foods own Brand (365)
· Alba (some of Alba’s products do not contain this chemical)
· Sea Chi Organics
· Citrus Magic

Some of the Brands that were tested to be FREE of this dangerous ingredient include:
· Aubrey Organics
· Dr. Haushka
· Nourish Food for Your Healthy Skin
· EO
· Avalon Organics
· Burt’s Bees
· Desert Essence
· Zia

In a time when people are increasingly trying to buy natural products that don’t contain harmful chemicals, it is a shame that these companies have done this because it makes people skeptical. Fortunately, we now have a list of brands that we can trust.
