Why MSG is Dangerous for your Health

Every now and again when I don’t feel like cooking, I’ll order some Chinese food from up the road.I always order the same thing… Spicy rice noodles with vegetables and no MSG!Then I come home and add some broccoli, spinach and tamari sauce and I have an easy take out meal.

Even though I only visit this Chinese restaurant once every few months, they know me in there as the girl who always wants her food with no MSG. Whenever they hand me the food they always say “no MSG, absolutely no MSG!”

Surprisingly, they are one of the only Chinese places that I have found in the whole of Brighton who offer the majority of their food without MSG. Most places do not give this option. I’ve noticed that when I go to California, most Chinese restaurants are more enlightened than those here in the UK, and offer all of their food without MSG.

I know that MSG is bad for me because a few years ago I went out for Dim Sum (Chinese Dumplings that nearly always contain copious amounts of MSG), and the next morning my eyes had huge red bags underneath them…that was last time I have ingested this toxic chemical!

Besides red bags under your eyes (which is reason enough to avoid this disgusting chemical), here are some more reasons to stay away from MSG: (all information is taken from Dr Russell Blaylock)

  • MSG acts as an excitotoxin, which means that it will cause cancer cells to become more mobile and spread. When you block cancer cells from glutamate (as in monosodium glutamate – MSG), their growth was dramatically slowed.
  • It has recently been discovered that there are glutamate receptors in nearly every organ and tissue in the body, including the digestive system and heart. When MSG is consumed, the glutamate in the blood increases 20 fold, which stimulates all of those receptors. This can potentially cause problems such as diarrohea and even cardiac death.
  • This is a particular problem for people who are magnesium deficient, because magnesium deficiency makes the receptors hypersensitive. (And the food that is highest in magnesium is chocolate! This could explain why many athletes who aren’t supplementing with magnesium go into sudden cardiac arrest….they probably had some schezwan noodles or Macdonald’s for lunch.
  • Animals exposed to MSG are often grossly obese.
  • MSG can make people addicted to carbohydrates and sugar which causes obesity.
  • MSG potentially causes metabolic syndrome, which is the precursor to diabetes. (Find out how yoga can help metabolic syndrome.)
  • It has been shown that MSG can open up the blood brain barrier. Many diseases are associated with an open blood brain barrier including Alzheimer’s, dementia, automimmune disorders and multiple sclerosis.
  • Dr Blaylock has seen many people come off of seizure medicine by cutting out MSG completely and supplementing magnesium. Imagine!
  • Remember that MSG is not only in Chinese food. It is found in loads of processed foods, vegetarian foods, gravies, stock cubes…the list goes on. I was also surprised to discover that many other items that I’ve seen in before effect us in a very similar way to MSG. These include Hydrolyzed protein, soya protein and yeast extract.

    Dr Blaylock claims that if we were to get rid of all MSG and ingredients similar to MSG in our society, we would:

    • See a significant drop in obesity
    • See a huge drop in metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypoglycaemia)
    • There would be a tremendous drop in certain cancers
    • You would see a huge drop in degenerative diseases such as parkinson’s, alzheimer’s, and autism.I can’t help but think of being at my mom’s house back in February. She pulled out a stock cube with MSG in it (I was making falafel). I refused to put any of it the food I was preparing because I knew it was toxic.

    Now I think about the fact that during that time my mom was going through treatment for breast cancer…and I am even more grateful than ever that I went with my instincts.The bottom line is that if we want to truly enjoy good health, then avoiding MSG is essential.       I accidentally ate M&M’s back in the day and that had MSG. At first I didn’t notice but I wanted to keep eating them. I felt very stimulated and I paid the price of course. MSG is hidden in autolyzed yeast extract and hydrolyzed vegetable protein so be careful.
