The Healing Power of Camu Camu

It seems that so many of the super foods that are making their way to my mouth, nourishing my body and opening up my mind come from Peru. What is it about this incredible country, which strangely with all of my travels I have never had any desire to do to (although the pull is beginning…) that produces such an abundance of incredible foods?

I mean chocolate, purple corn, lucama, ayahuasca tea and now camu camu are some of the most exciting additions to my life…you make think that is a bit sad…but they are making me so happy!

In comparison to oranges, for example, Camu Camu provides thirty times more vitamin C, ten times more iron, three times more niacin, twice as much riboflavin, and 50% more phosphorus. Camu Camu is also a significant source of potassium and beta carotene. It also has the full range of minerals and amino acids that are needed to aid in the absorption of vitamin C.

This fruit, which I have just enjoyed in a strawberry smoothie, gives a huge boost to our immune system and is anti-viral. Camu camu is also used as an effective antidepressant, and has helped many people come off pharmaceutical antidepressants.

In addition to lifting our moods so that we can become happier, more vibrant beings, camu camu increases mental function, making us smarter! That it is fabulously high in antioxidants means that it helps protect the unsaturated fats in the brain from free radical damage and oxidation. Vitamin C is a crucial factor in preventing many modern degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

While we may not get scurvy, our requirements of vitamin C are far greater than the recommended amounts. I find that although I eat plenty of fruits and veg high this vitamin, I always need to supplement. If I don’t, I find myself easily tired and more stressed. After all, vitamin C is absolutely necessary for our adrenal glands to function.

Camu Camu is also known to make our skin gorgeous due to its high antioxidant content…not to mention the fact that it can protect our eyesight.

I have been adding camu camu to smoothies, ice cream, oat serial, my Thai green curry I just made, and most exciting…my raw chocolate! Lovely!
