Beware of Liquid Aminos and Hydrolized Soy
This last weekend I went to a fantastic shamanic retreat. We ate delicious healthy food for breakfast and lunch and everyone there was interested in health and wellbeing. Then they brought out the liquid aminos to pour all over the nutritious food (YIKES!)
Liquid aminos are sold as a “healthy” alternative to soy sauce and salt. It all seems so easy, you just pour this tasty salty sauce all over your food, and you not only increase the flavor, but you also get your daily dose of your essential amino acids. The leader of our retreat, who is extremely into healthy living, was raving about them. What a perfect dietary supplement…yeah right!
Same as MSG
These liquid aminos are made out of hydrolyzed soy protein, which is one of the most toxic ingredients we can ingest into our bodies. Most of us know that monosodium glutamate (MSG) is terribly bad for our health. Basically, MSG is a toxin that causes a massive range of illness and disease.
Soybeans naturally have one of the highest levels of glutamate of any plant product. When they are hydrolyzed, the glutamate is released. In fact, the glutamate levels are often higher than in MSG containing products! The label on the bottle of the liquid aminos says that they are MSG free…but in fact they are potentially a higher source of glutamate than if you were to sprinkle MSG on your food.
A 25 year study on people who consumed large amounts of altered soy products (such as hydrolized) showed that they had the highest incidence of dementia and brain atrophy.
Dr. Baylock, one of the world’s leading experts on excitotoxins such as hydrolyzed soy protein says that people who complain of a massive amount of illnesses including chronic migraines feel much better when they come off of soy, especially soy that has been altered in any way. He says that it destroys the nervous system as well as other organs.
I recently wrote a post on MSG and other glutamate containing foods. Just to recap, if we all gave this toxin up we would:
- See a significant drop in obesity
- See a huge drop in metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, hypoglycemia)
- There would be a tremendous drop in certain cancers
- You would see a huge drop in degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and autism.
Yet vegetarians are eating soy as if it is some kind of miracle food. They have given up meat and now believe that their new vegetarian diet will ensure their good health.
Not a Super Food
But even more annoying to me is this label of “liquid aminos”. Even I was once deceived by this title. It actually sounds like some sort of miracle food, and as I discovered last weekend, even extremely knowledgeable people who are passionate about wellbeing are getting fooled.
As I sat watching everyone pour this toxin excitedly over their food, I had to say something. So I exclaimed “be careful of putting that on your food, it is extremely toxic.” One of the girls (a very lovely and intelligent girl I shall add) turned to me with the bottle in her hand and said “but it’s just liquid aminos.” Her facial expression was saying “how could that possibly be bad for you?”
At that point I realized that my saying something was not going to achieve anything, and it would actually do more harm than good since they all had this toxin all over their food. If you are going to eat rubbish, I suppose it is better to at least believe that it is healthy.
But I resolved to do something about this. It absolutely infuriates me that this product is sold almost as a super food, and it is getting away with it, even with people who know about nutrition! How can this possibly be going on??
And health food stores all over the world are stocking this toxin. Even my local health food shop Infinity Foods, which is one of the most ethical, health conscious, environmentally friendly, truly cooperative shops that I have ever been to supplies their customers with these mysterious “liquid aminos” under the guise that this is somehow healthy! This I cannot stand for!!
So I went to Infinity Foods today and had a chat with them. The woman said that she also believed that the traditional style of fermenting soy is best (as in the style of soy sauce and tamari, which are healthy. Fermenting is an ancient, natural way of creating food and actually makes soy healthy. Hydrolizing is a recent technique created in a laboratory) however, there are many people out there who believe that these “amino acids” (AKA toxic chemicals) are healthy and that there are differing opinions. So at this point, Infinity Foods are going to continue stocking this product.
So…I did my best. I will accept other people’s views while continuing to promote my own, which I believe is based on truly scientific research.
