Steve Pavlina’s Personal Development for Smart People
Recently I had the pleasure of receiving Steve Pavlina’s new book Personal Development for Smart People. Steve is an inspirational blogger who has helped many people make strides in their own personal journeys.
I generally gage a personal development book on what I personally gain from it, rather than what I think of the book, writing etc.
I can’t say that I was blown away by this book, but then it is generally a book that I would think “I have to get that book immediately” that blows me away, not one that I would get randomly.
But, I did have a few insights that I think are worth noting and being grateful for.
The basis of the book is that there are 3 main principles to personal development: Truth, love, and power. There are other sub principles as well.
My favourite part of the book was a section where there were specific questions to ask yourself which can help you identify where you need the most work. I enjoyed this a lot because I quite like quizzes!
Here are some questions for you to examine to identify which area you may most need to put a little effort into:
Truth:
Am I truthful with myself and others, or do I feel compelled to lie?
What do I predict will happen if I continue on my current course?
Are my predictions reasonable and accurate, or am I too optimistic?
Am I living in denial about anything?
Love:
Do I take time to connect with myself and others?
Do I express my true self when I communicate, or do I project a false image?
Do I love and accept myself and others unconditionally?
Do I seek out compatible relationships?
Power:
Do I accept complete responsibility for everything in my life?
What do I really want, and what am I willing to do to get it?
Am I focusing on what’s most important to me, or am I distracting myself?
Am I putting in the time to do what needs to be done?
How can I build my self discipline?
I thought that these were some good questions. I see myself as very truthful and very powerful. While I do seek out great relationships and I think I project a pretty accurate image of who I am, I could probably use to love and accept myself and others even more unconditionally than I do, so I would say that this is the area I could work on most.
So there you have it, Steve Pavlina’s Personal Development for Smart People. And should you buy it? The answer is…Does it call your name? Does it make you want to go “YES! I need to read that book?”
And even if you don’t read the book, I highly recommend checking out Steve’s blog at http://www.stevepavlina.com
