The incredible nourishment that the earth provides is incredible. There are so many super foods on the planet that are continuously being discovered and rediscovered. I love learning about all of the amazing gifts that we are given by nature. There are soooo many wonderful foods to be enjoyed, and the best part is that they are healing foods that provide nutrients and all of the things that we need for radiant beauty and vibrant wellbeing. Here are some of my latest discoveries.
Jerusalem Artichokes, also called Sunchokes are a cross between a potato, a water chestnut and an artichoke. This delicious food is a member of the sunflower family, and they have brightly colored flowers. In fact, the plant does not come from Jerusalem, but gets its name from the Italian word “girasole” which means sunflower. This was mistakenly translated into Jerusalem.
Jerusalem artichokes are packed with the beauty mineral iron. It is also a great source of potassium, thiamine, as well as other prettifying minerals. It has a similar consistency to potatoes, but it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. They actually assist in blood sugar control, which is why they are recommended to diabetics. They also feed the healthy bacteria (lactobacilli) in the intestinal tract.
I have been making loads of Jerusalem artichoke, leek soup, onion and garlic soup. They are also fabulous chopped up raw on a salad.
Aji Amarillo is also called a Peruvian yellow hot pepper because it is grown in the mountains of Peru, as well as Bolivia. This delicious pepper has a fruity flavour and is quite hot because it is a rich source of capsaicin. Capsaicin is what makes chillies hot, and it is cancer fighting, mood lifting, sex drive enhancing and weight slashing super food. Studies show people who eat capsaicin burn calories up to 15 minute longer because of all that heat that’s produced in the body. It also gets the circulation going around the body, so it prevents wrinkles.
Create a delicious raw salsa with tomatoes, cilantro, red bell peppers, lime juice, garlic and Aji Amarillo. You can add it to any food to add some extra spice.
Acerola, also known as Barbados cherry or wild crapemyrtle, is a tropical fruit grown from southern Texas through Mexico and down to Peru and Brazil. It helps tissue to grow and repair, it is one of the most important anti stress nutrients, It is essential in collagen formation which is necessary for preventing wrinkles, and it is vital for healthy teeth, gums and a beaming smile.
Acerola is great to add into smoothies or for drinking on its own.
Fuyu Persimmons originated in China and made its way to Japan over 1,000 years ago where it is currently considered the national fruit. It looks a little bit like an orangey tomato and is sweet and delicious. One of these amazing persimmons provides 50% or the vitamin A needed in a day, which helps with cell regeneration protects against eye problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts. It also provides loads of vitamin C and the mineral manganese which is good for healthy ligaments. It is also a great source of B6, potassium and fiber. Fuyu Persimmons are bursting with antioxidants to ensure radiant skin and vibrant eyes.
Persimmons are great in salads, sauces, smoothies, and on their own.
Durian is a yellow, smelly fruit contained in a large, spiky shell grown in South East Asia and Hawaii. It is considered the “King of all Fruits” and is either revered by those who love it or hated by those who cannot bear its pungent smell. Personally, I am not a fan of durian. When I lived in Thailand, I bought some and couldn’t even eat it because it smelled so strongly of stinky feet. On the other hand, I know many people who absolutely adore it, and I appreciate it’s amazing health and beauty properties (from a far).
Durian provides an incredible array of phytonutrients and antioxidants to energise the body and lift the spirit. It is very good for combating stress, depression, anxiety, aggression and insomnia. It enhances the beauty for glowing complexion, hair, and skin.
