Why Eat More Raw Food Super Foods?
Imagine throwing away your oven, stove, grill, and barbeque. Imagine never standing over a frying pan again. Imagine permanently replacing the word “Cook” with “Prepare.” Picture yourself eating only raw foods for the rest of your life.
Raw food is everywhere. Each week more and more raw food can be found at my local health foods shop, and I went to a few different raw food restaurants when I was in California.
Eat raw is continually being proven to fight disease, prevent aging, and offer a range of healing benefits. All raw foods are actually super foods!
These include increased energy, weight loss (or gain if you are too thin), improved skin, better digestion, diseases prevented and even disappearing. Most importantly, people that eat a diet high in raw foods don’t suffer with depression and other mental illnesses. Happiness and pure bliss are a side effect!
Why Bother?
The idea behind the raw food phenomenon is that Cooking causes major chemical changes to the food, so cooked food contains new and unrecognisable chemicals. Apparently a cooked potato contains over 400 more chemicals than when it is raw.
Your body doesn’t recognise these chemicals and treats them as toxins. It creates an immune response, and produces many white blood cells to fight the invaders. It also has to find safe places to put the chemicals that it doesn’t have time to remove. This long term storage of toxins accounts for many of the diseases prevalent in society.
Since the body is constantly attacking the food as an enemy as well as defending and storing toxins, it becomes depleted.
Heating food above 116 degrees F is also believed to destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. Furthermore, Cooking is thought to diminish the nutritional value and “life force” of food.
What do you Eat?
People on a raw food diet eat 100% raw, uncooked food. There are many people who find this a little difficult (or let’s face it, seriously challenging), so they choose a 60-99% raw food diet.
The diet is vegan, meaning dairy products and meat products are avoided, although some raw foodists may eat unpasturized goat’s cheese. Wild or organic food is generally consumed since it has a higher nutrient content than conventional food.
The bulk of the food eaten is fresh fruit, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, dried fruit, seaweed, and seeds. Juicing is also a major component of the raw food diet. Sounds like not enough to get you through life…you won’t believe the recipes that are out there which contain only raw foods. There are loads of cookbooks and websites filled with recipes that will tempt you into eating foods that will totally nourish your body.
Eat More Raw
So, now that you know all about this raw food craze, you may be shouting “yes! I want to go raw.” Or maybe you are saying to yourself, “yeah right, that sounds like science fiction.”
If you fall into the latter category, don’t fret. The best thing you can do is to just increase the amount of raw food in your diet. Eat a salad everyday for lunch rather than a sandwich. Buy a juicer and enjoy some, for example, fresh broccoli, carrot, ginger, Swiss chard and apple juice (mmm I made this one this morning and I am still buzzing!) Increase the amount of fresh fruit or even dried fruit that you eat. Get a cookbook and try out some of the recipes. There are some amazing ways to prepare raw food, you will be surprised.
The point is, you don’t have to become a raw foodist today…just remember that any increase in raw food to your diet is an improvement for your overall health and wellbeing.
